Begonia Gryphon: Advice for Growing This Cane Begonia Indoors or Out

Homifine.com - Begonia Gryphon is an evergreen perennial that has beautiful features and is perfect to grow as a houseplant. Where the best to grow Begonia?

Instagram/begonikka.7

Because they evolved in tropical regions, Begonia doesn't survive in frost. So, if you wanna grow the Begonia outdoors, you can grow them in USDA zones 8 and higher.

Another option, if you want to grow the Begonia as a houseplant year-round, you can opt to keep it indoors all the time. Or move the pot outside for the summer months.

And don't forget to move back to indoor before fall's first frost.

Best light

If you place this houseplant outdoors, pick a site with part shade that receives some sun in the early morning or later in the evening. They will get bleached out or scorched leaves while get much sun.

For indoor areas, you can place the Begonia in an east or west-facing window that receives either morning or late afternoon sun. Just avoid bright direct sun of a south-facing window.

Ideal temperature

Begonia can grow at temperatures between 60 and 85 F degrees. Prolonged temperatures below 50 F will restrict new growth. And over-humid conditions and poor air circulation can result in fungal diseases such as botrytis and powdery mildew.

Watering and fertilize

Instagram/rosyplant

When must we water the Begonia Gryphon? You can do it when the soil has fully dried throughout the entire root zone. Use a watering can when you're watering this houseplant. It can apply water only to the soil and let it flush through the soil and out the drainage holes (if you plant in a pot area).

Although Begonia include low maintenance houseplants, they still need fertilization for best growth. Fertilize them every 4 weeks from March through September. Don't fertilize them in winter unless you live in a tropical climate.

Repotting the Begonia Gryphon

Instagram/plant_aholics

Using a clay pot to plant the Begonia Gryphon is the best choice. This houseplant can also live for many years in the same pot. But, we still get repotting them to keep healthy and pretty houseplant. To repot, you can select a container that is 2-inches wider than the existing pot. And the question is, when is the right time to repot the plant?
1. When the irrigation water runs down the inside of the pot without soaking into the soil.
2. If the canes or roots seem to be bursting out of the pot and pushing out against the sides.
3. If you tip the plant out of the pot and see the roots circling around inside the pot.

Propagate

Instagram/mastergron

This is a common thing for a good houseplant. Even if you're doing it for yourself or giving to your friends. To propagate Begonia Gryphon, you can use some methods. There are:

  • Crown division (cutting the plant in half)
  • Rooting a stem or leaf cutting in a glass of water
  • Rooting a stem or leaf cutting in soil
  • Heel, mallet, or wedge propagation

Potential problems

Instagram/growthenburg

Like other plants, Begonia Gryphon also has their problems. Be it bad air circulation, prolonged humid conditions, or foliage that is wet for long periods of time.

And these problems can cause various diseases for the houseplant, such as white fly, thrips, mites, and mealybugs. You can keep this houseplant in the drier area to prevent this.
